A man from Aslam came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in the mosque and called out to him, saying, "Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery."The Prophet turned away from him, but the man kept repeating it until he had testified against himself four times. Then the Prophet ﷺ called him over and asked, "Are you insane?"He replied, "No."The Prophet asked, "Are you married?"He replied, "Yes."So the Prophet ﷺ said, "Take him away and stone him."Ibn Shihab said, "Someone who heard it from Jabir bin Abdullah informed me that he said, 'I was among those who stoned him. We stoned him at the prayer ground, and when the stones hurt him, he fled. We caught up with him at al-Harrah and stoned him there.'"
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Legal Punishments (6815-6816) and Muslim in the Book of Legal Punishments (16:1691), both through Layth bin Saad, who said, Aqeel narrated to me, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf and Saeed bin Musayab, from Abu Hurairah, who said, and then he mentioned it.Ibn Shihab heard this hadith from two companions. In one instance his teacher was Abu Salama, and in the second the name was left unspecified, but it later became clear that this too was Abu Salama, the one who heard this hadith from Abu Hurairah and Jabir bin Abdullah, as will come next.
