He had met some men from his clan among Banu Haritha who were companions of the Prophet ﷺ, including Rafi bin Khadij, Sahl bin Abu Hathma, and Suwayd bin Numan. They told him that the Qassama took place among them, in Banu Haritha bin Harith, concerning a man from the Ansar named Abdullah bin Sahl who was killed at Khaybar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "Will you swear fifty oaths and thereby establish your right against the killer," or he said, "your companion's killer?"They replied, "Messenger of Allah, we did not witness it, nor were we present."Bashir reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to them, "Then let the Jews absolve themselves by fifty oaths," and he mentioned the rest of it.

Bayhaqi (8/119) narrated it via Yaqub bin Sufyan, who said, Ibn Abu Uways narrated to us, my father narrated to me, from Yahya bin Saeed, that Bashir bin Yasar informed him, and he related it as mentioned. Its isnad is hasan because of Ibn Abu Uways, who is Ismail bin Abdullah bin Uways bin Malik Asbahi. Nasai graded him daif, while the others accepted him as reliable, and he is hasan al-hadith. His father, Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Uways Asbahi, is also disputed, and he is likewise hasan al-hadith, or below that level.Bayhaqi said, Sufyan bin Uyayna narrated it from Yahya, but he differed from the group in its wording. He means that in his version he mentioned that the Jews were to begin the oaths, and that the Prophet ﷺ said to the two Ansaris, "Will the Jews clear themselves from you by fifty oaths in which they swear that they did not kill him?" Muslim narrated this (1669:2) from Amr Naqid, who said, Sufyan narrated to us. And also, Muhammad bin Muthanna narrated to us, Abdul-Wahhab Thaqafi narrated to us, both together, from Yahya bin Saeed, from Bashir bin Yasar, from Sahl bin Abu Hathma, with a similar wording to their hadith, but he did not give the actual wording of the hadith, even though its wording differs from the wording of the group's hadith regarding who begins the oath.Shafii indicated that Ibn Uyayna was not consistent about whether the Prophet ﷺ gave the Ansaris precedence in the oaths, or the Jews. It is said in the hadith that he gave the Ansaris precedence, and he would say, that is it, or something similar to this. Bayhaqi mentioned this.It is as Shafii said, for Nasai narrated it (4717) from Muhammad bin Mansur, who said, Sufyan narrated to us with his isnad, and in it the Ansaris were given precedence in the oaths. This shows that Sufyan bin Uyayna was not consistent on a single wording, while Muslim relied on the wording of Amr Naqid from Sufyan, which matches the wording of the group, and that is why he did not give the actual wording.
