We were on the campaign of Constantinople at Dhalqiya when a man from the people of Palestine, one of their nobles and chosen ones, recognized as such among them, came to us. His name was Hani bin Kulthum bin Sharik al-Kinani. He greeted Abdullah bin Abu Zakariya, who acknowledged his standing.Khalid told us that Abdullah bin Abu Zakariya said, "I heard Umm Darda say, 'I heard Abu Darda say, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Every sin Allah may forgive, except for one who dies as a polytheist, or one who kills a believer intentionally."'"Hani bin Kulthum then said, "I heard Mahmud bin Rabi narrate from Ubada bin Samit, who heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that he said, 'Whoever kills a believer and rejoices in his killing, Allah will accept from him neither obligatory nor voluntary worship.'"Khalid told us, "Then Ibn Abu Zakariya narrated to me from Umm Darda, from Abu Darda, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that he said, 'The believer continues to move forward in righteousness as long as he does not shed forbidden blood. But once he sheds forbidden blood, he is left exhausted and unable to proceed.'"Hani bin Kulthum narrated from Mahmud bin Rabi, from Ubada bin Samit, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the very same.
Abu Dawud (4270), Ibn Hibban (5980), Hakim (4/351), Bayhaqi (8/21), and Ibn Abu Asim in Diyat (29) all narrated it through the hadith of Khalid bin Dahhan, who said, then narrated it. The wording given is that of Abu Dawud, and some narrators abridged it. Its chain is sahih. Khalid bin Dahhan al-Qurashi, the freedman of the Quraysh, Abu Mughira al-Dimashqi, is trustworthy. Ibn Main, Darimi, Abu Zura, Duhaym, and others affirmed his trustworthiness. Hakim said, "Its chain is sahih."As for his saying "balaha," it means that a man becomes balaha when he is overcome by exhaustion and can no longer move. The journey wore him down until he collapsed in it. By this he means the person's falling into ruin through the shedding of forbidden blood.Khalid bin Dahhan said, "I asked Yahya bin Yahya Ghassani about his saying, 'and he takes satisfaction in killing him.' He said, 'This refers to those who fight in civil strife, one of them kills another, believing himself to be rightly guided, and does not seek Allah's forgiveness for it.'"Abu Dawud mentioned it (4271) and said, "'Ightabata' means his blood is poured out profusely."
