The Prophet ﷺ said, "Abd al-Rahman bin Samura, do not ask for a position of authority. If you are given it after asking, you will be left to handle it on your own, but if you are given it without having asked, you will be aided in it."
قال النبي ﷺ: يا عبد الرحمن بن سمرة لا تسأل الإمارة، فإنك أن أوتيتها عن مسألة وكلت إليها، وإن أوتيتها من غير مسألة أعنت عليها.
Bukhari narrated it in "The Book of Oaths and Vows" (6622), and Muslim narrated it in "The Book of Oaths" (1652), both from the hadith of Jareer bin Hazim, who said, "Hasan narrated to us, Abdul-Rahman bin Samura narrated to us," and he mentioned it.
