Sahl bin Saad reported, "We were in the masjid on a Friday night when a man from the Ansar came and said, 'If a man were to find another man with his wife and he spoke of it, you would flog him, and if he killed him, you would kill him, and if he kept silent, he would be silent while burning with rage. By Allah, I will certainly ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about this.'The next day he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him, saying, "If a man were to find another man with his wife and he spoke of it, you would flog him, and if he killed him, you would kill him, and if he kept silent, he would be silent while burning with rage."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah, grant a solution," and he continued to supplicate.Then the verses of mutual cursing were revealed, "And those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves" [Nur 24:6], and the verses that follow.That very man, out of all the people, was the one tested by it. He came with his wife to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the two of them invoked the oath of mutual cursing. The man bore witness four times by Allah that he was among the truthful, then on the fifth he invoked the curse of Allah upon himself if he were among the liars.Then she moved forward to swear, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "Stop."She refused, and she swore the curse.When the two of them had turned to leave, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Perhaps she will give birth to a child who is dark-skinned with curly hair."And she did give birth to a child who was dark-skinned with curly hair.
إنا ليلة الجمعة في المسجد. إذ جاء رجل من الأنصار فقال: لو أن رجلا وجد مع امرأته رجلا فتكلم جلدتموه، أو قتل قتلتموه، وإن سكت سكت على غيظ. والله! لأسألن عنه رسول الله ﷺ. فلما كان من الغد أتى رسول الله ﷺ فسأله، فقال: لو أن رجلا وجد مع امرأته رجلا فتكلم جلدتموه، أو قتل قتلتموه، أو سكت سكت على غيظ. فقال: اللهم افتح وجعل يدعو. فنزلت آية اللعان: {والذين يرمون أزواجهم ولم يكن لهم شهداء إلا أنفسهم} [النور: ١] هذه الآيات. فابتلى به ذلك الرجل من بين الناس. فجاء هو وامرأته إلى رسول الله ﷺ فتلاعنا، فشهد الرجل أربع شهادات بالله إنه لمن الصادقين. ثم لعن الخامسة أن لعنة الله عليه إن كان من الكاذبين. فذهبت لتلعن. فقال لها رسول الله ﷺ مه فأبت فلعنت. فلما أدبرا قال: لعلها أن تجيء به أسود جعدا فجاءت به أسود جعدا.
