Sahl bin Saad reported,

Uwaymir al-Ajlani came to Asim bin Adi al-Ansari and said to him, "Asim, what do you think of a man who finds another man with his wife? Should he kill him, in which case you would put him to death? Or what should he do? Asim, ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about this for me."So Asim asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked such questions and found them objectionable, so much so that what he heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ weighed heavily on Asim.When Asim returned to his family, Uwaymir came to him and asked, "Asim, what did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to you?"Asim replied to Uwaymir, "You have not brought me any good. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked the question I asked him about."Uwaymir said, "By Allah, I will not stop until I ask him about it myself."So Uwaymir went forward until he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the midst of the people and said, "Messenger of Allah, what do you think of a man who finds another man with his wife? Should he kill him, in which case you would put him to death? Or what should he do?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verses have been revealed concerning you and your wife. Go and bring her."Sahl said, "So they performed the lian, and I was with the people in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When they had finished their mutual cursing, Uwaymir said, 'I would be lying against her, Messenger of Allah, if I kept her.' So he divorced her three times before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to do so."Malik said, Ibn Shihab said, "That became the established practice for those who perform lian thereafter."

عن سهل بن سعد الساعدي أخبره

أن عويمرا العجلاني جاء إلى عاصم بن عدي الأنصاري. فقال له: يا عاصم. أرأيت رجلا وجد مع امرأته رجلا. أيقتله فتقتلونه؟ أم كيف يفعل؟ سل لي، يا عاصم، عن ذلك رسول الله ﷺ فسأل عاصم رسول الله ﷺ عن ذلك. فكره رسول الله ﷺ المسائل وعابها. حتى كبر على عاصم ما سمع من رسول الله ﷺ. فلما رجع عاصم إلى أهله، جاءه عويمر. فقال: يا عاصم. ماذا قال لك رسول الله ﷺ؟ فقال عاصم لعويمر: لم تأتني بخير. قد كره رسول الله ﷺ المسألة التي سألته عنها. فقال عويمر: والله لا أنتهي حتى أسأله عنها. فأقبل عويمر حتى أتى رسول الله ﷺ وسط الناس. فقال: يا رسول الله. أرأيت رجلا وجد مع امرأته رجلا، أيقتله فتقتلونه؟ أم كيف يفعل؟ فقال رسول الله ﷺ: قد أنزل فيك وفي صاحبتك. فاذهب فأت بها فقال سهل: فتلاعنا وأنا مع الناس، عند رسول الله ﷺ. فلما فرغا من تلاعنهما، قال عويمر: كذبت عليها يا رسول الله إن أمسكتها. فطلقها ثلاثا قبل أن يأمره رسول الله ﷺ. قال مالك: قال ابن شهاب: فكانت تلك، بعد، سنة المتلاعنين.
