His sister was married to a man who divorced her, then left her alone until her waiting period had ended. After that, he proposed to marry her again. Maqil was struck with indignation at this and said, "He left her when he had the chance to keep her, and now he proposes to her again!" So he stood between her and the man. Then Allah revealed, "And when you divorce women and they have fulfilled their term, do not prevent them..." [Baqarah 2:232], to the end of the verse. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him and recited it to him. So he set aside his indignation and submitted to the command of Allah.
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Divorce (5331), on the authority of Muhammad bin Muthanna, who said, Abdul-Ala narrated to us, who said, Saeed narrated to us, from Qatada, who said, Hasan narrated to us, that Maqil bin Yasar said, and he mentioned it.
