When forty nights of the fifty had passed, a messenger from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ orders you to stay away from your wife."I asked, "Shall I divorce her, or what should I do?"He replied, "No, just keep away from her and do not approach her."He sent the same instruction to my two companions. So I said to my wife, "Go to your family and stay with them until Allah decides this matter." …the hadith continues.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4418), and Muslim in the Book of Repentance (2769), both through the route of Ibn Shihab Zuhri. Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Kaab bin Malik informed me, from his father, from his grandfather.
