The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us the choice, and we chose Allah and His Messenger, so it was not counted against us as anything.
خيرنا رسول الله ﷺ، فاخترنا الله ورسوله فلم يعد ذلك علينا شيئا.
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Divorce (5262), and Muslim in the Book of Divorce (28:1477), through the route of Amash, who said, Muslim (Abu Duha) narrated to us from Masruq, from Ayesha, and he related it as mentioned.Bukhari also reported it (5263), and Muslim (25), through the route of Ismail bin Abu Khalid, from Shaybi, from Masruq, who said, "I would not care whether I gave my wife the choice once, a hundred times, or a thousand times, so long as she chooses me afterward. I asked Ayesha about this, and she said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us the choice, so was that a divorce?'" meaning, it was not a divorce.
