Abdul-Rahman bin Awf came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with traces of saffron on him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him about it, and he informed him that he had gotten married.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "How much did you give her as dowry?"He replied, "The weight of a date-stone in gold."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Hold a wedding feast, even if only with a single sheep."
أن عبد الرحمن بن عوف جاء إلى رسول الله ﷺ وبه أثر صفرة، فسأله رسول الله ﷺ فأخبره أنه تزوج. فقال له رسول الله ﷺ: كم شقت إليها؟ فقال: زنة نواة من ذهب. فقال له رسول الله ﷺ: أولم ولو بشاة.
Malik narrated it in his chapter on marriage (47), from Humayd Tawil, from Anas bin Malik, and he mentioned it. Bukhari narrated it in his chapter on marriage (5153) through Malik, with the same wording. Muslim narrated it in his chapter on marriage (1427:81) through Shuba, from Qatada and Humayd, from Anas, with similar wording.His saying, "How much did you give her as bridal gift," means what did you pay her as mahr. The mahr was called "suq" because the Arabs' wealth consisted of livestock, so when a man married, he would drive camels and sheep to her as a bridal gift.This hadith contains a permission to use yellow coloring from saffron or other substances for the groom.
