He heard the Prophet ﷺ delivering a sermon in which he mentioned the she-camel and the man who hamstrung it. The Messenger of Allah recited, "when the most wicked of them rose up" [Shams 91:12], and explained that the one who rose against her was a powerful, fierce man, well protected among his clan, like Abu Zamah.Then he spoke about women and said, "One of you deliberately flogs his wife the way slaves are flogged, and then perhaps he lies with her at the end of that same day."Then he admonished them for laughing at the sound of flatulence, saying, "Why should any of you laugh at something he does himself?"
أنه سمع النبي ﷺ يخطب وذكر الناقة، والذي عقر، فقال رسول الله {إذ أنبعث أشقاها} [الشمس: ١٢] انبعث لها رجل عزيز عارم منيع في رهطه، مثل أبي زمعة، وذكر النساء فقال: يعمد أحدكم يجلد امرأته جلد العبيد، فلعله يضاجعها من آخر يومه ثم وعظهم في ضحكهم من الضرطة وقال: لم يضحك أحدكم مما يفعل.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Tafsir (4942), and Muslim in the Book of Paradise (2855), both from the hadith of Hisham, from his father, from Abdullah bin Zama, who mentioned it. The wording given is Bukhari's, while Muslim's wording has, "Why does one of you flog his wife?" And in another narration, "the flogging of a slave woman."Abu Zama was al-Aswad bin Muttalib bin Asad, who died in disbelief. His son Zama was killed on the day of Badr, and Abdullah bin Zama was his son.
