Aishah said, "Shall I not tell you about myself and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"We said, "Yes, please do."She said, "On the night when it was my turn for the Prophet ﷺ to be with me, he came in, placed his cloak aside, took off his sandals and set them by his feet, spread the edge of his lower garment on his bed, and lay down. He stayed only long enough to think I had fallen asleep, then he took up his cloak quietly, put on his sandals quietly, opened the door, went out, and shut it quietly behind him. I put my shift over my head, covered myself, and wrapped my outer garment around me, then followed his footsteps until he came to al-Baqi. He stood there for a long time, then raised his hands three times, then turned to leave. I turned as well. He walked quickly, and I walked quickly. He jogged, and I jogged. He ran, and I ran. I got there ahead of him and went inside. I had only just lain down when he came in and said, 'What is the matter with you, Aish, breathing so heavily, your sides heaving?'"She said, "I said, 'Nothing.'"He said, "Either you tell me, or the Subtle, the All-Aware will tell me."She said, "I said, 'Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you,' and I told him."He said, "So you were the dark figure I saw ahead of me?"I said, "Yes."Then he gave me a shove in the chest that hurt me and said, "Did you think Allah and His Messenger would be unjust to you?"She said, "Whatever people conceal, Allah knows it. Yes."He said, "Jibreel came to me at the moment you saw. He called to me but kept it from you, and I answered him but kept it from you. He could not enter upon you while you had taken off your clothes, and I thought you had fallen asleep, so I disliked waking you and feared you would feel lonely. He said, 'Your Lord commands you to go to the people of al-Baqi and ask forgiveness for them.'"She said, "I said, 'How do I say it, Messenger of Allah?'"He said, "Say, 'Peace be upon you, people of these dwellings, among the believers and the Muslims. May Allah have mercy on those of us who have gone ahead and those who follow after. And we, Allah willing, will join you.'"
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Funerals (103:974) from Harun bin Saeed Ayli, who said, Abdullah bin Wahb told us, Ibn Jurayj informed us, from Abdullah bin Kathir bin Muttalib, that he heard Muhammad bin Qays say, I heard Ayesha say, and then he mentioned it.His saying, "hashya" with the letter shin, means short of breath, as happens to someone who hurries while walking. His saying, "rabiya" means with a swollen belly. His saying, "would Allah and His Messenger wrong you," is from hayf, meaning injustice, that is, that the Messenger would enter another wife's turn upon yours. This is something that could never happen from the Prophet ﷺ, who is an example for all believers. This indicates that observing one's turn is obligatory, since neglecting it would not be considered injustice unless it were obligatory.
