I came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned to him a woman I intended to propose to.He said, "Go and look at her, for it is more likely to bring harmony between you."So I went to a woman from the Ansar and proposed to her through her parents, informing them of what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said. They seemed to dislike the idea.The woman heard this from behind her curtain and said, "If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded you to look, then look. Otherwise, I implore you not to."It was as though she considered the matter a serious one.He said, "So I looked at her, then married her."And he mentioned how compatible she was with him.
أتيت النبي ﷺ، فذكرت له امرأة أخطبها، فقال: اذهب فانظر إليها، فإنه أجدر أن يؤدم بينكما. قال: فأتيت امرأة من الأنصار، فخطبتها إلى أبويها، وأخبرتهما بقول رسول الله ﷺ، فكأنهما كرها ذلك، قال: فسمعت ذلك المرأة وهي في خدرها، فقالت: إن كان رسول الله ﷺ أمرك أن تنظر، فانظر، وإلا إني أنشدك. كأنهما عظمت ذلك عليه. قال: فنظرت إليها: فتزوجتها. فذكر من موافقتها.
Narrated by Tirmidhi (1087), Nasai (3235), Ibn Majah (1866), Ahmad (18137) with this wording, Bayhaqi (7/84-85), and Ibn Jarud (675), all of them from the hadith of Bakr bin Abdullah Muzani, from Mughira bin Shuba, who related it. Some of them shortened it. Bayhaqi added, "No woman ever occupied that position with me, and I have married seventy, or a good seventy-odd, women." Its chain of transmission is sahih.There is disagreement over whether Bakr bin Abdullah Muzani heard directly from Mughira bin Shuba. Ibn Main said, "Bakr did not hear from Mughira." But Daraqutni, in Ilal (139/7), held that he did hear from him, for he was asked, "Did he hear from Mughira?" and he said, "Yes."As for what Abdul-Razzaq narrated in his Musannaf (10335), and through his route Ibn Majah (1865), Ibn Hibban (4043), Hakim (165/2), Bayhaqi (7/84), Ibn Jarud (676), and Daraqutni (253/3), from Mamar, from Thabit, from Anas, that Mughira bin Shuba proposed to a woman and the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Go and look at her, for that will make it more likely that harmony will endure between you," this is a mistake. Mamar erred in it, for he is daif in his transmission from Thabit, as Ibn Main said. Rather, the sahih version is that of Thabit, from Bakr, as a mursal report, as Daraqutni said.Abdul-Razzaq also narrated it from Sufyan Thawri, from Humayd, from Anas, but Daraqutni said, "Rather, Humayd narrated it from Bakr. The hadith revolves around Bakr bin Abdullah Muzani." End of Daraqutni's statement.He also said in his Sunan, "The correct version is from Thabit, from Bakr Muzani." Then he narrated it from Ibn Mukhlid, from Jurjani, from Abdul-Razzaq, from Mamar, from Thabit, from Bakr Muzani, that Mughira bin Shuba said, "I came to the Prophet ﷺ," and he related something similar.
