I slapped a servant of ours, then ran away. I came back just before the noon prayer and prayed behind my father. He summoned the servant and summoned me, then said, "Take retaliation from him."But the servant pardoned me. Then my father said, "In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we, the family of Muqarrin, had only one servant girl. One of us slapped her, and news of this reached the Prophet ﷺ. He said, 'Set her free.'They said, 'They have no servant other than her.'He said, 'Then let them keep her in service, and when they no longer need her, let them release her.'"
لطمت مولى لنا فهربت، ثم جئت قبيل الظهر، فصليت خلف أبي، فدعاه ودعاني، ثم قال: امتثل منه. فعفا، ثم قال: كنا بنى مقرن على عهد رسول الله ﷺ ليس لنا إلا خادم واحدة، فلطمها أحدنا، فبلغ ذلك النبي ﷺ، فقال: أعتقوها. قالوا: ليس لهم خادم غيرها. قال: فليستخدموها، فإذا استغنوا عنها، فليخلوا سبيلها.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Vows (1658) through several routes, from Abdullah bin Numayr, who said, Sufyan narrated to us, from Salama bin Kuhayl, from Muawiya bin Suwayd, and he related it.In another version, Suwayd bin Muqrin said, A man had slapped a slave girl of his, so he said, "Did you not know that the face is not to be struck?" He said, "I recall that I was the seventh among my brothers with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we had no servant but one," and he went on to relate the hadith.
