Thursday, and what a Thursday it was. Then he wept until his tears soaked the pebbles. He said, "The Messenger of Allah's ﷺ illness grew severe on Thursday, and he said, 'Bring me writing material so I may write for you a document after which you will never go astray.' But they disputed, and disputing is not fitting in the presence of a prophet. They said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is delirious.'He said, 'Leave me, for the state I am in is better than what you are calling me to.'At his death he gave three instructions, 'Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula, and reward delegations as I used to reward them.'" And I have forgotten the third.Yaqub bin Muhammad said, I asked Mughira bin Abdul-Rahman about the Arabian Peninsula, and he said, "It is Makkah, Madinah, Yamamah, and Yemen."Yaqub said, "And Arj is the beginning of Tihamah."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Jihad (3053), and Muslim in the Book of Wills (1637), both from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Sulayman Ahwal, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who related it.The scholars differed over defining the Arabian Peninsula, and the correct view is that it is the land lying between the Sea of Hind, the Sea of Qulzum, the Arabian Gulf, and the Sea of Abyssinia. It was attributed to the Arabs because it was in their hands, and it contained their homelands and dwellings. However, what the polytheists are barred from inhabiting is specifically the Hijaz, that is, Makkah and Madinah, according to the view of the majority of scholars. As for their entry into the Sacred Precinct for the benefit of the Muslims, this requires the permission of the imam or whoever acts on his behalf, as Shafii and others have stated. See further Fath al-Bari (171/6).Regarding his saying, "Has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ become delirious," and in Sahih Muslim, "Is he delirious? Ask him to clarify," Qadi Iyad said, "This is more sahih than the narration of those who reported it as 'hajara' or 'yahjuru,' because none of this could be true of him ﷺ, since the meaning of hajara is to rave incoherently. Rather, this came from the one who said it as a question meant to rebuke the one who said, 'Do not write it down,' meaning, 'Do not abandon the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and treat it as the words of someone raving in his speech, for he does not rave.'"Regarding his saying, "Leave me, for what I am engaged in is better," its meaning is, leave me from the dispute and clamor you have started, for what I am engaged in, namely watching over my duty to Allah and preparing to meet Him, is better than what you are engaged in.Regarding his saying, "And give the delegation their gifts," this is a command from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to give the delegations their due gifts, to host them, and to honor them, so as to please them and to encourage others among those whose hearts were being won over and the like, for in the last days of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delegations increased from every direction to enter Islam.Regarding his saying, "I forgot the third," and in another version, "He fell silent about the third, or he said it and I forgot it." As for his saying "fell silent," that refers to Ibn Abbas, who did not mention the third. "Or he said it and I forgot it" was said by Saeed bin Jubayr. And it has been said that the third matter was the preparation of the army of Usama.
