I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say in his sermon during the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage, "Allah has granted every rightful person their due, so there is no bequest for an heir."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول في خطبته عام حجة الوداع: إن الله قد أعطى كل ذي حق حقه، فلا وصية لوارث.
Narrated by Abu Dawud (2870), Tirmidhi (2120), Ibn Majah (2713), Ahmad (22294), and Bayhaqi (6/72, 264) through the route of Ismail bin Ayyash, who said, Shurahbil bin Muslim Khawlani told us, saying, I heard Abu Umama Bahili say, and then he related the hadith. Its chain is hasan due to the discussion surrounding Ismail bin Ayyash, except that his transmission from the Levantines is not problematic, and this hadith is among them. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih." In one copy it reads, "Hasan gharib." He also said, "It has been related from Abu Umama, from the Prophet ﷺ, by a route other than this one. Ismail bin Ayyash's transmission from the people of Iraq and the people of Hijaz is not reliable in what he alone reports, for he related unfamiliar narrations from them, while his transmission from the people of Syria is more sahih. This is what Muhammad bin Ismail said."Bayhaqi likewise transmitted from Imam Ahmad that he said, "What Ismail bin Ayyash related from the Levantines is sahih, but what he related from the people of Hijaz is not sahih."He also transmitted from Shafii, after he had related from him, from Ibn Uyayna, from Sulayman Ahwal, from Mujahid, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No bequest for an heir," that he said, "Some of the Levantines related a hadith that the people of hadith do not establish, because some of its narrators are unknown. So we have related it from the Prophet ﷺ as disconnected, and we relied instead on the hadith of the people of the military campaigns generally, that the Prophet ﷺ said in the year of the conquest, 'No bequest for an heir,' along with the consensus of the community upon this ruling."It appears that what he means by this is the hadith of Abu Umama, which is related by Ismail bin Ayyash Shami, from Shurahbil bin Muslim, from Abu Umama. The hadith has another route as well, which is what Ibn Jarud related in al-Muntaqa (949), from Abu Ayub Sulayman bin Abdul-Majid Bahrani, who said, Yazid bin Abd Rabbih told us, who said, Walid bin Muslim told us, who said, Ibn Jabir told us, and Salim bin Amir and others told me, from Abu Umama and others who were present at the sermon of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that day. Among what he said in it was, "Indeed, Allah has given each rightful person his due, so there is no bequest for an heir."Abu Dawud also related it (1955) through another route from Walid bin Muslim, in abridged form. This chain is sahih. Walid bin Muslim is a mudallis, but he explicitly stated direct transmission at every level of this chain.Ibn Jabir is Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir Azdi, Abu Utba Shami Darimi. He was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Main, Ibn Saad, Abu Hatim, and others.
