The wife of Saad bin Rabi brought the two daughters of Saad to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, these are the two daughters of Saad. Their father was killed alongside you at the Battle of Uhud, and their uncle has taken everything their father left behind. A woman is not married except for her wealth."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent until the verse of inheritance was revealed. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned the brother of Saad bin Rabi and said, "Give the two daughters of Saad two-thirds of his wealth, give his wife one-eighth, and take what remains for yourself."
Ibn Majah (2720) narrated it from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel, from Jabir bin Abdullah, and he related it. Likewise, Ubaydullah bin Amr Raqqi narrated it, from Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel, and through his route Tirmidhi (2092), Ahmad (14798), and Hakim (4/333-334) narrated it. Tirmidhi said, "This is a sahih hadith. We do not know it except from the hadith of Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel, and Sharik has also narrated it, from Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel."I say, the correct view is that it is hasan, because of the discussion regarding Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel, except that his hadith is hasan. Munziri quoted from Tirmidhi that he graded it hasan, and that is more accurate. As for what Abu Dawud (2891) narrated from the hadith of Bishr bin Mufaddal, who said, Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel narrated to us, from Jabir bin Abdullah, who said, "We went out with the Messenger of Allah until we came to a woman of the Ansar in the markets. The woman came with two daughters of hers and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, these are the two daughters of Thabit bin Qays, who was killed alongside you on the day of Uhud. Their paternal uncle has seized their wealth and all their inheritance, leaving them nothing without taking it. What do you think, O Messenger of Allah? By Allah, they will never be married unless they have wealth.' The Messenger of Allah said, 'Allah will decide on that.'"He said, then Surah Nisa was revealed, "Allah instructs you concerning your children" [Nisa 4:11] the verse. So the Messenger of Allah said, "Call the woman and her companion to me for me." Then he said to their uncle, "Give them two thirds, and give their mother one eighth, and what remains is yours."This is an error. Bishr made a mistake in it, as Abu Dawud said. Rather, they were the two daughters of Saad bin Rabi, and Thabit bin Qays was killed on the day of Yamama. Bayhaqi, Khattabi, and others said the same. The correct view is that they were the two daughters of Saad bin Rabi.
