The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Give the fixed shares of inheritance to those entitled to them, and whatever remains goes to the nearest male heir."
رسول الله ﷺ قال: ألحقوا الفرائض بأهلها، فما بقي فهو لأولى رجل ذكر.
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on inheritance (6732), and Muslim narrated it in the chapter on inheritance (1615), both from the hadith of Wahib, from Ibn Tawus, from his father, from Abdullah Ibn Abbas, who mentioned it.His saying, "Give the shares to those entitled to them," means give the holders of fixed shares their shares. His saying, "then to the nearest male relative," means to the closest male relative, meaning closeness in lineage.Know that the causes of inheritance are three, lineage, marriage, and clientship. What is meant by lineage is that relatives inherit from one another. What is meant by marriage is that one of the spouses inherits from the other. And what is meant by clientship is that the one who freed a slave and his paternal relatives inherit from the freed slave.
