The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not give a ruqba, and do not give an umra. Whoever gives something as a ruqba or as an umra, it belongs to the heirs of the recipient."
أن النبي ﷺ قال: لا ترقبوا، ولا تعمروا، فمن أرقب شيئا أو أعمره فهو لورثته.
Abu Dawud (3556), Nasai (3731), and Bayhaqi in al-Kubra (6/175) and al-Sughra (2208) all narrated it through Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Ibn Jurayj, from Ataa, from Jabir, as mentioned. Its chain of transmission is sahih. The hadith of Jabir bin Abdullah has been narrated through various chains and with various wordings. Either he heard it from the Prophet ﷺ on several occasions, each time with the wording he related, or the narrators handled it freely and reported it according to its meaning, since the meaning of the hadith does not vary, namely that a lifetime gift belongs to the one it was granted to and to his heirs, and it never reverts to the one who granted it.
