The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me a thick Coptic garment from those that Dihya Kalbi had presented to him as a gift, and I gave it to my wife to wear.He asked, "Why have you not worn the Coptic garment?"I replied, "I gave it to my wife."He said, "Tell her to wear a lining underneath it, for I fear it may reveal the shape of her body."
كساني رسول قبطية كثيقة مما أهداها له دحية الكلبي، فكسوتها امرأتي، فقال: ما لك لم تلبس القبطية؟ قلت: كسوتها امرأتي، فقال: مرها فلتجعل تحتها غلالة، فإني أخاف أن تصف عظامها.
Ahmad (21786), (21788), Bayhaqi (2/234), and Diya in al-Mukhtarah (1365-1366) narrated it through the route of Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel, from Muhammad bin Usama bin Zayd, from his father, who said, then he mentioned it.This chain is hasan because of Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel, for his hadith is hasan when he does not contradict others and does not report something that is rejected as coming from him.As for the word "qubtiyyah," it refers to garments made of fine linen that were produced in Egypt, named after the Copts though not following the regular pattern of derivation, to distinguish it from the word meaning a person. This was stated by Fayyumi in al-Misbah al-Munir.As for the word "ghilalah," it is a thin garment worn underneath the outer covering.
