She said to Urwa, "Nephew, we used to sight the new moon, then the next, and then the next, three new moons in two months, and no fire was lit in the houses of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for cooking."I asked, "Auntie, what kept you alive?"She replied, "The two black things, dates and water. However, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had neighbors from the Ansar who owned milk-giving animals, and they would send some of their milk to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he would give us to drink."
قالت لعروة: يا ابن أختي، إن كنا لننظر إلى الهلال، ثم الهلال، ثلاثة أهلة في شهرين، وما أوقدت في أبيات رسول الله ﷺ نار. فقلت: يا خالة، ما كان يعيشكم؟ قالت: الأسودان: التمر والماء، إلا أنه قد كان لرسول الله ﷺ جيران من الأنصار كانت لهم منائح، وكانوا يمنحون رسول الله ﷺ من ألبانهم فيسقينا.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Gifts (2567), and Muslim in the Book of Asceticism (2972), both from the hadith of Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Hazim, from his father, from Yazid bin Ruman, from Urwa, from Ayesha, who said, and then mentioned it.
