The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about lost property. He said, "Announce it, do not hide it, and do not conceal it. If its owner comes, give it to him. Otherwise, it is the property of Allah, which He gives to whomever He wills."
أن رسول الله ﷺ سئل عن اللقطة، فقال: تعرف، ولا تغيب، ولا تكتم، فإن جاء صاحبها، وإلا فهو مال الله يؤتيه من يشاء.
Bazzar narrated it in Kashf Astar (1367), from Muhammad bin Muamar, who said, Hajjaj narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us (meaning Ibn Salama), from Saeed Jariri, from Abu Ala, from Mutarrif, from Abu Hurairah, who said, and he mentioned it. Bazzar said, "We do not know of Mutarrif narrating from Abu Hurairah except this." Abu Ala is Yazid bin Abdullah bin Shikhir, and Mutarrif is thiqah among the narrators of the Jamaah. Haythami said in Majma (4/167), "Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih."On this subject there is also what was narrated from Munzir bin Jareer, who said, I was with Jareer (bin Abdullah) at Bawazij, and the herdsman brought him the cattle, and among them was a cow that did not belong to them. Jareer said to him, "What is this?" He said, "It attached itself to the cattle, we do not know whose it is." Jareer said, "Take it out, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'No one shelters a stray animal except one who is himself astray.'"Abu Dawud narrated it (1720) from Amr bin Awn, Khalid bin Abdullah informed us, from Abu Hayan Taymi, from Munzir bin Jareer, and he mentioned it.There is a difference of narration regarding Abu Hayan, who is Yahya bin Saeed bin Hayan Taymi, thiqah among the narrators of the Jamaah. Khalid bin Abdullah Wasiti narrated it from him in this manner. Yahya bin Saeed narrated it from him, saying, Dahhak, the maternal uncle of Munzir bin Jareer, narrated to us, from Munzir bin Jareer. Ibn Majah (2503) narrated it through this route. Likewise Yaala bin Ubayd Tanafisi narrated it from him, from Dahhak bin Munzir. This is found in Tahawi's Mushkil (4719), and in Imam Ahmad (19184) from Yahya bin Zakariya (who is Ibn Abu Zaida), from Abu Hayan, from Dahhak bin Munzir, in abbreviated form.Dahhak bin Munzir, also said to be Dahhak bin Jareer bin Abdullah, had no one narrate from him except Abu Hayan. Ibn Madini said, "They do not know Dahhak." However, he is corroborated by Abu Zura Amr bin Jareer, from Munzir bin Jareer. Nasai narrated it in Kubra (5799) through the hadith of Ibrahim bin Uyayna, from Abu Hayan, from Abu Zura Amr bin Jareer.Shuba narrated it, from Abu Hayan, from a man, from Munzir bin Jareer, from Jareer. This is found in Sunan al-Kubra of Nasai. Rawh bin Qasim narrated it, from Abu Hayan, from Dahhak bin Munzir, from a man, from Jareer. Tabarani narrated it in Awsat (1403).Mizzi mentioned in Tahzib Kamal, in the biography of Dahhak bin Munzir, some of these versions, and said, "The confusion in it comes from Abu Hayan Taymi." End of quote.Bawazij is a town near the Tigris. His saying, "shelters," means he does not mix it in with his own property.
