Ali bin Abu Talib came in to see Fatimah and found Hasan and Husayn crying. He asked, "Why are they crying?"She replied, "From hunger."Ali went out and found a dinar in the marketplace. He came back to Fatimah and told her about it.She said, "Go to such-and-such Jewish man and get us some flour."Ali went to the Jew and bought flour from him with the dinar. The Jew asked, "Are you the son-in-law of that man who claims to be the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"Ali said, "Yes."The Jew said, "Then take back your dinar, and the flour is yours."Ali left and brought the flour to Fatimah and told her what had happened. She said, "Go to such-and-such butcher and get us a dirham's worth of meat."He went and pawned the dinar for a dirham's worth of meat and brought it back. She kneaded the dough, set it on the fire, and baked the bread. Then she sent for her father, and he came to them. She said, "Messenger of Allah, let me tell you about this. If you see it as lawful for us, we will eat it and you will eat with us. The matter is such-and-such."He said, "Eat in the name of Allah."So they ate from it. While they were still in their place, suddenly a young man came calling out by Allah and by Islam for his lost dinar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave orders, and the young man was summoned to him. He questioned him, and the young man said, "It dropped from me in the marketplace."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Ali, go to the butcher and say to him, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ tells you to send the dinar to me, and your dirham is my responsibility.'"So the butcher sent it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ handed it over to the young man.
Abu Dawud (1716) narrated it from Jafar bin Musafir Tinnisi, who said, Ibn Abu Fudayk narrated to us, Musa bin Yaqub Zami narrated to us, from Abu Hazim, from Sahl bin Saad, who reported it and mentioned it. Its isnad is hasan because of the discussion concerning Musa bin Yaqub. Ibn Madini and Nasai declared him daif, while Ibn Main deemed him trustworthy. Abu Dawud said, "His hadith is acceptable." Ibn Adi said, "In my view there is no harm in him." A narrator of this standing has his hadith graded hasan, provided nothing objectionable appears in what he transmits. This story has been narrated through many different routes, some of which are not sound. See Majma al-Zawaid (3/169–170). However, taken together they indicate that it has a basis. Abdul-Razzaq recorded some of them (10/140–142).An objection has been raised against this hadith, namely that he spent it before making it known. The response given is that this was perhaps due to being compelled by necessity, as the story itself indicates, and that if its owner came forward, it would be returned to him, which is indeed what happened. It has also been said that no condition was set requiring a year to pass in the case of a small lost item. This same story has also been narrated from Ata bin Yasar, from Ali bin Abu Talib, that the Prophet ﷺ commanded him to make it known, but he never found anyone to claim it. This version is unlikely.Bayhaqi mentioned some of these routes in Sunan al-Kubra (6/194), then said, "The hadiths that speak of requiring a year of publicizing it before it may be permissible to use are more sahih and more numerous, so they take precedence."
