Bukhari related it in the Beginning of Creation (3198), and Muslim in the Book of Sharecropping (1610:139), both from the hadith of Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, that Arwa bint Uways claimed against Saeed bin Zayd that he had taken part of her land. She brought her dispute against him to Marwan bin Hakam. Saeed said, "Would I take anything from her land after what I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" Marwan asked, "What did you hear from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say," and he related the hadith. Marwan said to him, "I will not ask you for evidence after this." Saeed then said, "O Allah, if she is lying, blind her eyes and kill her on her own land." He said, she did not die until she had lost her sight, then while she was walking on her land she fell into a pit and died.In another version, he said, "I saw her blind, groping along the walls, saying, 'Saeed bin Zayd's prayer has struck me.' Then while she was walking in the house she passed by a well in the house, fell into it, and it became her grave."All of this is found in Muslim, while Bukhari was content to mention only the raised part of the hadith without the story.The hadith has other sahih routes of transmission, in which it reads, "Whoever wrongfully seizes a handspan of land, Allah will make him wear it as a collar from seven earths on the Day of Resurrection." Muslim related it. In another version, "Whoever wrongs another of any portion of land, he will be made to wear it as a collar from seven earths." Bukhari related it in his Sahih (2452).Regarding the wording "Whoever takes a handspan of land wrongfully," it may be asked, if a man wrongs another of a mere handspan of land, how can he be made to wear a collar of it from seven earths, when Allah Almighty says, "The recompense for an evil is an evil like it" [Shura 42:40]? The answer given is that when a man owns a handspan of land, he owns what is above it and what is beneath it. So if another man wrongs him of a handspan of land, Allah will make him wear its like as a collar, above the earth and beneath it, down to seven earths, for Allah Almighty says, "It is Allah who created seven heavens and of the earth their like" [Talaq 65:12].
