Salama reported, "We raided the tribe of Fazara with Abu Bakr in command, having been appointed over us by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When we were within an hour of their watering place, Abu Bakr ordered us to halt and rest. Then he launched the attack, reached the water, and killed those he killed and took captives.I caught sight of a group of people among them, including women and children, and I feared they would reach the mountain before me, so I shot an arrow between them and the mountain. When they saw the arrow, they stopped. I drove them back as captives. Among them was a woman from the tribe of Fazara wearing a leather garment (the qishʿ is a leather mat), and with her was a daughter of hers, one of the most beautiful women among the Arabs. I drove them along until I brought them to Abu Bakr, who awarded me her daughter as a share of the spoils. We returned to Medina, and I had not so much as lifted her garment. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met me in the marketplace and said, "Salama, give me the woman."I said, "Messenger of Allah, by Allah, she has caught my fancy, and I have not lifted her garment."The next day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met me again in the marketplace and said to me, "Salama, give me the woman, may Allah bless your father."I said, "She is yours, Messenger of Allah. By Allah, I have not lifted her garment."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then sent her to the people of Mecca and ransomed with her some Muslims who had been taken captive in Mecca.
Muslim narrated it in jihad (1755) from Zuhayr bin Harb, who said, Umar bin Yunus told us, Ikrima bin Ammar told us, Iyas bin Salama told me, my father (Salama bin Akwa) told me, and he mentioned it.The majority of scholars have held this view, that there is no obstacle to separating a mother from her grown child in sale or gift, since it may not always be possible to keep them together in sale or gift, given that one of them may have a need that does not apply to the other.
