The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever hoards is a sinner."Saeed was asked, "But you yourself hoard?"Saeed replied, "Muamar, who used to narrate this hadith, also used to hoard."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: من احتكر فهو خاطئ. فقيل لسعيد: فإنك تحتكر؟ قال سعيد: إن معمرا الذي كان يحدث هذا الحديث كان يحتكر
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Musaqah (1605:129) from Abdullah bin Maslama bin Qanab, who said, Sulayman (meaning Ibn Bilal) narrated to us, from Yahya (that is, Ibn Saeed), who said, Saeed bin Musayab used to narrate that Muamar said, then he mentioned it.Muamar is the son of Abdullah Abu Muamar, one of the Banu Adi bin Kaab.The fact that a companion narrates a hadith and then acts contrary to it, and likewise a successor narrates it and acts contrary to it, with his acting contrary to it being cited as evidence because of the companion's acting contrary to it, all of this is suggestive, as Bayhaqi said (5/30), "Both of them practiced hoarding in a manner other than the one that was prohibited."Khattabi said, "Although the hadith came with general wording, the narrator's practice of hoarding indicates that it applies only to certain things or certain circumstances, since a companion is not expected to narrate a hadith and then act contrary to it. Likewise, Saeed bin Musayab, given his standing and knowledge, is not expected to narrate a hadith and then act contrary to it, unless the hadith is understood to refer to certain particular things. It has indeed been reported that he used to hoard olive oil." End of quote.The statements of the scholars on this will come at the end of the chapter.
