Talq had a slave who was a cupper named Nafi Abu Tayba. Talq went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ask him about the slave's earnings.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not take it."Talq repeated the question to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he replied, "Use it to feed your water-carrying camel, and put it in its belly."
أنه كان له غلام حجام يقال له: نافع أبو طيبة، فانطلق إلى رسول الله ﷺ يسأله عن خراجه، فقال: لا تقربه فردد على رسول الله ﷺ فقال: اعلف به الناضح، واجعله في كرشه.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (23689), Tabarani in al-Kabir (312/20), Bukhari in Tarikh al-Kabir (53/8-54), and Bayhaqi (337/9), all of them through the route of Layth, who said, Yazid bin Abu Habib narrated to me, from Abu Ufayr Ansari, from Muhammad bin Sahl bin Abu Hathma, from Muhaysa bin Masud, and he related it. The wording given is Ahmad's.Its isnad is hasan because of Abu Ufayr Ansari, whom Ajli deemed trustworthy, saying, "From Banu Haritha, a trustworthy follower of the companions" (2002). He is among the men listed in Tajil, so refer to it, for it contains further details.As for Abu Taybah, it was said his name was Nafi, as mentioned earlier, and it was said his name was Dinar, and it was said his name was Maysara. None of this is correct. He became known by his kunya, and for that reason the two sheikhs were content to mention his kunya without stating his actual name. Whatever his name was, he is Abu Taybah, the cupper of the Prophet ﷺ.
