I asked Anas bin Malik, "Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declare Madinah a sanctuary?"He replied, "Yes, the area between such-and-such and such-and-such. Its trees are not to be cut. Whoever introduces an innovation in it, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people."
قلت لأنس بن مالك: أحرم رسول الله ﷺ المدينة؟ قال: نعم، ما بين كذا إلى كذا، لا يقطع شجرها، من أحدث فيها حدثا، فعليه لعنة الله والملائكة والناس أجمعين.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Holding Fast to the Quran and Sunnah (7306), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hajj (1366), both from the hadith of Abdul-Wahid, who said, Asim narrated to us, and he related it. The wording given is that of Bukhari, and Muslim's wording is close to it, with the addition, "Allah will not accept from him on the Day of Judgment any excuse or compensation."
