Sharik sold silver on my behalf on credit until the season, or until the Hajj. He came to me and informed me, so I said, "This is a matter that is not lawful."He replied, "I sold it in the market, and no one objected to me about it."So I went to Bara bin Azib and asked him, and he said, "The Prophet ﷺ came to Medina while we used to engage in this kind of sale, and he said, 'Whatever is hand to hand, there is no harm in it, but whatever is on credit is usury.' Go to Zayd bin Arqam, for his trade is greater than mine."So I went to him and asked him, and he said the same.
باع شريك لى ورقا بنسيئة إلى الموسم، أو إلى الحج، فجاء إلي، فأخبرني، فقلت: هذا أمر لا يصلح. قال: قد بعته فى السوق، فلم ينكر ذلك علي أحد. فأتيت البراء بن عازب، فسألته، فقال: قدم النبي ﷺ المدينة ونحن نبيع هذا البيع، فقال: ما كان يدا بيد فلا بأس به، وما كان نسيئة فهو ربا. وائت زيد بن أرقم؛ فإنه أعظم تجارة منى. فأتيته، فسألته، فقال مثل ذلك.
Muslim narrated it in the chapter on Musaqah (1589:86), from Muhammad bin Hatim bin Maymun, who said, Sufyan bin Uyayna narrated to us, from Amr (that is, Ibn Dinar), from Abu Minhal, with the same text.Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on Sales (2180, 2181), and Muslim (87), both of them through Shuba, who said, Habib bin Abu Thabit informed me, saying, I heard Abu Minhal say, I asked Bara bin Azib about currency exchange, and he said, "Ask Zayd bin Arqam, for he knows better." So I asked Zayd, and he said, "Ask Bara, for he knows better."Then the two of them said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade selling silver for gold on credit."
