The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever frees his share of a jointly-owned slave is responsible for completing the slave's freedom from his own wealth. If he has no wealth, the slave is to be valued at a fair price, and the slave is then required to work to earn the remainder of his price without being burdened beyond his capacity."
عن النبي ﷺ قال: من أعتق شقيصا من مملوكه فعليه خلاصه في ماله، فإن لم يكن له مال قوم المملوك قيمة عدل، ثم استسعي غير مشقوق عليه.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Partnership (2492), and Muslim in the Book of Manumission (1503), both from the hadith of Saeed bin Abu Aruba, from Qatada, from Nadr bin Anas, from Bashir bin Nuhayk, from Abu Hurairah who said, then he mentioned it.Muslim also narrated it in the Book of Manumission (1502) through various routes from Muhammad bin Jafar, who said, Shuba narrated to us, from Qatada, from Nadr bin Anas, from Bashir bin Nuhayk, from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said regarding a slave jointly owned by two men, when one of them frees his share, "He is liable."Further detail will follow in the Book of Manumission.
