We were in Madinah when a year of famine struck us. Ibn Zubayr used to provide us with dates as our ration, and Ibn Umar would pass by us and say, "Do not eat dates two at a time, for the Prophet ﷺ forbade pairing them, unless one of you asks permission from his companion."
كنا بالمدينة، فأصابتنا سنة، فكان ابن الزبير يرزقنا التمر، وكان ابن عمر يمر بنا، فيقول: لا تقرنوا؛ فإن النبي ﷺ نهي عن القرآن إلا أن يستأذن الرجل منكم أخاه.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Partnership (2490), and Muslim in the Book of Drinks (2045, 150), both through Shubah, who said, "I heard Jabala bin Suhaym say," and then he mentioned it. The wording given is Bukhari's, and Muslim added, Shubah said, "I think this phrase belongs only to Ibn Umar's own words," meaning the part about seeking permission.Bukhari also related it (2489) through Sufyan, from Jabala bin Suhaym, with the wording, "The Prophet ﷺ forbade a man to combine two dates together unless he sought the permission of his companions."
