The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The one who has the means to repay his debt but delays makes his honor and punishment lawful."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: لي الواجد يحل عرضه وعقوبته.
This was narrated by Abu Dawud (3628), Nasai (4689, 4690), Ibn Majah (2427), and Ahmad (17946), and Ibn Hibban (5089) and Hakim (4/104) graded it sahih, all of them from the hadith of Wabr bin Abu Dulayla, an elder from the people of Taif, from Muhammad bin Maymun bin Musayka, from Amr bin Shareed, from his father, and he related it. Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Maymun bin Musayka, for his narrator Wabr bin Abu Dulayla praised him in Musnad Ahmad, and Abu Hatim said, "The people of Taif narrated from him." Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the reliable narrators. His saying, "Delay for the one who has means" with the lam vocalized as fatha and the ya doubled, means postponement. And al-wajid is the one who has the capacity to pay off what he owes as a debt. His saying, "his ird" means his complaint. His saying, "and his punishment" means his imprisonment. This was stated by Ali Tanafisi, the teacher of Ibn Majah. On this subject there is also what was narrated from Harmas bin Habib, from his father, from his grandfather, who said, I came to the Prophet ﷺ with a debtor of mine, and he said to me, "Stay with him." Then later that day he passed by me and said, "What happened with your captive, brother of Banu Tamim?"This was narrated by Abu Dawud (3629) and Ibn Majah (2428), both from the hadith of Nadr bin Shumayl, who said, Harmas bin Habib narrated to us with his chain. Harmas bin Habib and his father, at-Tamimi al-Anbari, are both unknown, for Habib was narrated from only by his son, and his son Harmas was narrated from only by Nadr bin Shumayl, and I have not found anyone who confirmed their reliability.
