Abu Qatada reported that he heard him narrate from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he stood among them and mentioned that jihad in the path of Allah and faith in Allah are the best of deeds.A man stood up and asked, "Messenger of Allah, tell me, if I am killed in the path of Allah, will my sins be forgiven?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ answered him, "Yes, if you are killed in the path of Allah while patient, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What did you say?"The man repeated, "Tell me, if I am killed in the path of Allah, will my sins be forgiven?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Yes, while you are patient, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating, except for debt, for Jibreel told me that."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Leadership (1885) from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Saeed bin Abu Saeed, from Abdullah bin Abu Qatada, and he mentioned it. Yahya bin Saeed likewise narrated it from Saeed bin Abu Saeed Maqburi with his chain, similar to the hadith of Layth. Malik narrated it through this same route in Muwatta (2/461) from Yahya bin Saeed.Daraqutni said in Ilal (6/134), "The statement of the one who said, from Malik, from Yahya bin Saeed, from Maqburi, is more sahih. He said, Layth narrated it from Saad (this is how it appears, though the correct form is Saeed), and Ibn Abu Dhib narrated it from Saeed Maqburi, from Abdullah bin Abu Qatada, from his father." Then he said, "The correct view is the view of the one who narrated it from Yahya bin Saeed, from Maqburi, from Ibn Abu Qatada, from his father, since this is supported by Layth and Ibn Abu Dhib, who both narrated from Maqburi in this same manner." End of quote.
