The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Delay in payment by a wealthy person is an injustice, and when one of you is referred to a solvent person for payment, let him follow up with him."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: مطل الغني ظلم، وإذا أتبع أحدكم على مليء فليتبع.
Malik related it in Buyu (84) from Abu Zinad, from Aaraj, from Abu Hurairah in this manner. Bukhari related it in Hawalah (2287), and Muslim in Musaqah (1564), both by way of Malik in the same manner. His saying, "the delay of the wealthy man," the root meaning of matl is stretching. It is said, "matalt al-hadidah" when you stretch a piece of iron to elongate it. What is meant here is delaying payment of a due debt without excuse. Its meaning is, if one of you is referred to a solvent debtor, let him follow him. Some scholars of knowledge said, if a man is referred to a solvent debtor and he accepts the referral, then the one who made the referral is absolved, and he has no right to return to him. This is the view of Shafii, Ahmad, and Ishaq. Tirmidhi mentioned it (1308).I say, this is what the hadith indicates. The scholars of knowledge have other views which Tirmidhi mentioned. As for what was narrated from Ibn Umar, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The delay of the wealthy man is oppression. If you are referred to a solvent debtor, follow him. And do not sell two sales in one sale," this contains a break in the chain. It was related by Tirmidhi (1309), Ibn Majah (2404), Ahmad (5395), Tahawi in his Mushkil (2754), and Ibn Jarud (599), all of them through routes from Hushaym bin Bashir, who said, Yunus bin Ubayd narrated to us, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, and he related it.Yunus bin Ubayd did not hear the first part of the hadith from Nafi, as Ibn Main explicitly stated.Refer to its sourcing in the collected chapters on what is forbidden regarding sales, in the chapter on one who sells two sales in one sale. And refer to the jurisprudence of the hadith in Minna Kubra (5/330).
