I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Recite the Quran, but do not go to extremes regarding it, do not turn away from it, do not earn a living through it, and do not seek to amass wealth by means of it."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: اقرءوا القرآن، ولا تغلوا فيه، ولا تجفوا عنه، ولا تأكلوا به، ولا تستكثروا به.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (15529) from Ismail bin Ibrahim, from Hisham, meaning Dastawai, who said, Yahya bin Abu Kathir told me, from Abu Rashid Hubrani, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Shibl said, and then he related it. Mustaghfiri also narrated it by this same route in Fadail Quran (5). Its chain of transmission is sahih. Daraqutni also declared it sahih in Ilal (9/278).Ayub Sakhtiyani followed him in narrating from Yahya with his chain. Waheeb bin Khalid narrated it from him. Tabarani recorded it in Mujam al-Awsat (2595), except that he added in the wording of the hadith, "Women are the people of the Fire." A man then said, "Messenger of Allah, are they not our mothers, our sisters, and our daughters?" So he mentioned their ingratitude toward their husbands' rights, and their neglect of those rights.Yahya bin Abu Kathir's hearing from Abu Rashid is confirmed as sahih. As for what appears in some narrations, that he narrated from Zayd bin Salam, from his grandfather Abu Salam Mamtur, who said, Muawiya wrote to Abdul-Rahman bin Shibl telling him to teach the people what he had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he gathered them and spoke, and then he related it.Imam Ahmad narrated it (1/15666) from Abdul-Razzaq, and it is also in his Musannaf (19444), and by the route of Hammam (15668), and Aban (15669), all of them, meaning Mamar, Hammam, and Aban, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Zayd, with his chain. This causes no harm, for both routes are sahih, as Abu Hatim said in Ilal (2/63), except that he said Ayub omitted two men from the chain. I say, Hisham Dastawai did the same, as mentioned before, so Ayub should not be blamed.
