Bara bin Azib reported,

When the Prophet ﷺ performed Umrah in the month of Dhul-Qadah, the people of Mecca refused to let him enter the city until he reached an agreement with them that he would stay there for three days. When they were writing the treaty, the Muslims wrote, "This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon."The Meccans objected, "We do not accept this from you. If we knew you were the Messenger of Allah, we would not have prevented you from anything. Rather, you are Muhammad bin Abdullah."He said, "I am the Messenger of Allah, and I am Muhammad bin Abdullah."Then he said to Ali bin Abu Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, "Erase 'Messenger of Allah.'"Ali replied, "No, by Allah, I will never erase you."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the document, though he was not skilled at writing, and wrote, "This is what Muhammad bin Abdullah has agreed upon. No weapons are to enter Mecca except the sword in its sheath. He shall not take anyone out from among its people who wishes to follow him, nor shall he prevent any of his companions from staying behind if they wish to remain."When he entered the city and the term had expired, the Meccans came to Ali and said, "Tell your companion to leave us, for the term has ended."So the Prophet ﷺ departed, and Hamza's daughter followed him calling out, "Uncle, uncle!" Ali reached for her, took her by the hand, and said to Fatimah, "Take your cousin," and she carried her. Then Ali, Zayd, and Jafar disputed over her.Ali said, "I took her, and she is my cousin."Jafar said, "She is my cousin, and her maternal aunt is my wife."Zayd said, "She is my brother's daughter."So the Prophet ﷺ ruled that she should go to her maternal aunt, saying, "The maternal aunt holds the position of a mother."He said to Ali, "You are from me, and I am from you."He said to Jafar, "You resemble me in features and character."And he said to Zayd, "You are our brother and our freedman."Ali asked, "Will you not marry Hamza's daughter?"He answered, "She is the daughter of my brother through breastfeeding."
