His wife Umm Tulayq came to him and said, "The time for Hajj has arrived, Abu Tulayq."He owned a camel and a she-camel. He would perform Hajj on the she-camel and go to battle on the camel. She asked him to give her the camel so she could perform Hajj on it.He said, "Don't you know that I have devoted it to the cause of Allah?"She replied, "Hajj is one of the paths of Allah. So give it to me, may Allah have mercy on you."He said, "I do not wish to give it to you."She said, "Then give me your she-camel, and you go for Hajj on the camel."He said, "I will not prefer you over myself in that."She said, "Then give me something from your spending money."He said, "I have nothing beyond what I need for myself and my family for me to set out with and to leave behind for you."She said, "If you gave it to me, Allah would replace it for you."When he refused her, she said, "When you go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, convey my greetings of peace to him and tell him what I said to you."He said, "So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, conveyed her greetings, and told him what Umm Tulayq had said."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Umm Tulayq has spoken the truth. Had you given her the camel, it would have been in the cause of Allah. Had you given her your she-camel, both she and you would have been in the cause of Allah. And had you given her some of your spending money, Allah would have replaced it for you."He said, "She also asks you, Messenger of Allah, what is equivalent to Hajj?"He said, "Umra in Ramadan."

Narrated by Dulabi in Kuna (41/1) - and this is his wording -, Bazzar in abridged form - Kashf Astar (1151), Abu Yaala in his Musnad - Matalib Aliyah (1148), and Tabarani in Kabir (32/22), all of them through routes from Mukhtar bin Fulful, from Talq bin Habib, from Abu Taliq, who said, then he mentioned it.Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Mukhtar bin Fulful, for he is hasan al-hadith. Haythami said in Majmu (3/283), "Tabarani narrated it in Kabir and Bazzar in abridged form, and the men of Bazzar's chain are the men of the sahih."This hadith has also come through Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to a man from the Ansar and his wife, "Perform Umrah in Ramadan, for an Umrah in Ramadan is for you both like a Hajj." Narrated by Imam Ahmad (16406) and Tabarani in Kabir (4224), both from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, who said, Ibn Munkadir told us, he said, I heard Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam, then he mentioned it.Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam was a minor companion, and Ajli said he was a trustworthy successor. The correct view is that he had companionship with the Prophet, as Bukhari said, for Imam Ahmad narrated (16404), with a sahih chain of transmission, from Yahya bin Abu Haytham Attar, who said, I heard Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ named me Yusuf, and wiped his hand over my head." However, he did not narrate from the Prophet himself, and for this reason Abu Dawud (1189) and Ibn Khuzayma (2376) reported it.The hadith of this chapter comes through another route from Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam, from his grandmother Umm Maqil, who said, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed his Farewell Hajj, we had a camel, and Abu Maqil had dedicated it to the cause of Allah. Then illness struck us, and Abu Maqil passed away, while the Prophet set out. When he finished his Hajj, I came to him, and he said, "O Umm Maqil, what kept you from going out with us?" She said, we had prepared ourselves, but Abu Maqil died, and we had a camel which we used to perform Hajj on, but Abu Maqil had bequeathed it to the cause of Allah. He said, "Why did you not go out on it? Hajj is indeed in the cause of Allah. But since this Hajj with us has passed you by, perform Umrah in Ramadan, for it is like a Hajj." She used to say, "Hajj is Hajj, and Umrah is Umrah, and this is what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, I do not know whether it was specifically for me." The wording is Abu Dawud's.In the chain of transmission is Muhammad bin Ishaq, who conceals his sources, and he did not state explicitly. In other narrations, Umm Maqil was present with her husband before the Prophet. In another narration, Abu Maqil was among those who performed Hajj with the Prophet. And in other narrations there are further discrepancies beyond what I have mentioned, which show that this story has severe confusion in it. And success comes from Allah.Ibn Hajar said in Fath al-Bari (3/604), "A similar story occurred regarding Umm Taliq, reported by Abu Ali bin Sakan and Ibn Manda in the biographies of the companions, and by Dulabi in Kuna, through the route of Talq bin Habib, that Abu Taliq told him that his wife said to him, and she had a male camel and a female camel, 'Give me your male camel so I may perform Hajj on it.' He said, 'My camel is dedicated to the cause of Allah.' She said, 'It is indeed in the cause of Allah for me to perform Hajj on it.' Then he mentioned the hadith, and in it, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'You have spoken the truth, Umm Taliq.' And in it, 'What equals the Hajj?' He said, 'An Umrah in Ramadan.'"Ibn Abdul-Barr claimed that Umm Maqil is the same as Umm Taliq, having two kunyas, but there is doubt about this. For Abu Maqil died during the time of the Prophet, while Abu Taliq lived on until Talq bin Habib heard from him, and he was among the youngest of the successors. This indicates that the two women are different, and this is also indicated by the difference between the two accounts. And there is no avoiding the interpretation of the unnamed woman in the hadith of Ibn Abbas as being either Umm Sinan or Umm Salim, because of the difference in the story found in the hadith of Ibn Abbas compared to the story found in the hadith of others, and because of his saying in the hadith of Ibn Abbas, "She is from the Ansar," whereas Umm Maqil was from Asad. A similar story also occurred regarding Umm Haytham, and Allah knows best. End of quote.
