The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Tomorrow, Allah willing, we will camp at the valley of Banu Kinanah, where they swore their pact upon disbelief."
عن رسول الله ﷺ أنه قال: ننزل غدا إن شاء الله بخيف بني كنانة، حيث تقاسموا على الكفر.
Bukhari narrated it in the Hajj (1589), and Muslim in the Hajj (1314), both from the hadith of Ibn Shihab Zuhri, who said, Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman Ibn Awf narrated to me, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it, and the wording here is Muslim's. Bukhari added at the beginning of the hadith, "when he intended to arrive at Makkah, meaning when he was returning from Mina." This is made explicit in the narration that follows it (1590), which states, the Prophet ﷺ said the day after the Day of Sacrifice, while he was at Mina, "Tomorrow we will camp at the ravine of Banu Kinana, where they pledged themselves to disbelief," meaning by that Muhassab. The khayf is what lies above the path of a flood-stream and slopes down from the thickness of a mountain, and the masjid of Mina is called Masjid al-Khayf because it sits at the foot of its mountain.
