I gave the Messenger of Allah ﷺ water from Zamzam to drink, and he drank it while standing. He had asked for water while he was at the House.
سقيت رسول الله ﷺ من زمزم فشرب قائما، واستسقى وهو عند البيت.
Bukhari related it in Hajj (1637), and Muslim in Drinks (2027:120), both through Asim, from Shaybi, from Ibn Abbas, and he narrated it. The wording given is Muslim's. Asim is al-Ahwal, and he said, "Ikrima then swore that on that day he had only been on a camel." Bukhari mentioned this but Muslim did not. In Ibn Majah (3422) it reads, "I mentioned that to Ikrima, and he swore by Allah that he had not done it."I say, this denial of Ikrima's is strange, because Ibn Abbas states plainly that he gave water to the Prophet ﷺ and he drank it standing. Does Ikrima mean to accuse Ibn Abbas of lying? Yet it is possible to reconcile his statement, "on that day he was only on a camel," with what Ibn Abbas said, namely that the Prophet ﷺ, after finishing the tawaf, made his camel kneel and placed the Maqam between himself and the House, then prayed two rakahs, as Jabir mentioned in his account of the Prophet's ﷺ Hajj. Ikrima himself reported this from Ibn Abbas, saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Makkah while he was unwell, so he performed tawaf on his mount. Every time he reached the corner, he touched it with a curved stick. When he finished his tawaf, he made his camel kneel and prayed two rakahs." Abu Dawud related this (1881) through Yazid bin Abu Ziyad, from Ikrima. Yazid bin Abu Ziyad is al-Hashimi, their freedman, and he is daif. So perhaps he drank Zamzum water after that while standing.Ali bin Abu Talib indicated that the Prophet ﷺ drank while standing, on the occasion when he sat attending to people's needs in the courtyard of Kufa... He drank while standing, then said, "Some people dislike drinking while standing, but the Prophet ﷺ did just as I have done." Bukhari related this in Drinks (5616).But is drinking while standing something specific to Zamzum water? What appears from Ali bin Abu Talib's action is that it is not specific to Zamzum water, and I have not come across any statement from the scholars recommending drinking Zamzum water while standing. Zamzum water and other water are the same with regard to drinking it standing or sitting. As for the prohibition reported concerning drinking water while standing, it is a matter of discouragement, not outright prohibition, as will be explained in its proper place, Allah willing.
