I heard Hajjaj bin Yusuf say, while delivering a sermon on the pulpit, "Arrange the Quran just as Jibreel arranged it. The surah in which al-Baqarah is mentioned, the surah in which an-Nisa is mentioned, and the surah in which Aal Imran is mentioned."The narrator said, I then met Ibrahim and told him what Hajjaj had said. He cursed him and said, "Abdul Rahman bin Yazid told me that he was with Abdullah bin Masud when he came to Jamrat al-Aqaba. He went down into the bottom of the valley, faced the pillar, and pelted it from the floor of the valley with seven pebbles, saying takbir with each pebble."He said, I asked, "Abu Abdul Rahman, the people throw at it from above."He replied, "By the One besides whom there is no god, this is the standing place of the one to whom Surah al-Baqarah was revealed."
سمعت الحجاج بن يوسف يقول. وهو يخطب على المنبر: ألفوا القرآن كما ألفه جبريل السورة التي يذكر فيها البقرة، والسورة التي يذكر فيها النساء، والسورة التي يذكر فيها آل عمران. قال: فلقيت إبراهيم فأخبرته بقوله فسبه وقال: حدثني عبد الرحمن بن يزيد أنه كان مع عبد الله بن مسعود، فأتى جمرة العقبة فاستبطن الوادي، فاستعرضها، فرماها من بطن الوادي بسبع حصيات يكبر مع كل حصاة. قال: فقلت يا أبا عبد الرحمن إن الناس يرمونها من فوقع فقال: هذا والذي لا إله غيره مقام الذي أنزلت عليه سورة البقرة.
