Nasai (3037) narrated it from Abu Dawud, who said, "Abu Asim, Affan, and Sulayman told us, from Shuba, from Mashash, from Ataa, from Ibn Abbas, from Fadl," and he related it.Imam Ahmad (1811) and Abu Yaala (6734) both narrated it through Affan, from Shuba, with this same chain, similarly. Its chain is hasan because of Mashash, who is Abu Sasan or Abu Azhar Sulami. Ibn Main deemed him trustworthy. Abu Hatim said, "His hadith is sound." Abu Zura said, "There is no harm in him." Someone like this, his hadith is graded hasan.However, Tirmidhi (893) found fault with it, saying that Shuba narrated this hadith from Mashash, from Ataa, from Ibn Abbas. He said this is a mistake, that Mashash erred in it and added "from Fadl bin Abbas." Ibn Jurayj and others narrated this hadith from Ataa, from Ibn Abbas, without mentioning "from Fadl bin Abbas" in it. Mashash was from Basra, and Shuba narrated from him, he said.I say, it is not implausible that Ataa narrated this hadith through two different routes, and Shuba is an authority in hadith and the person most knowledgeable about Mashash, so his narration from him strengthens this side, and there is no need to accuse Mashash of error.
