The Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed from Arafah, and when he reached the mountain pass, he dismounted, relieved himself, and performed ablution without completing it thoroughly.I asked him, "Will you pray now, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "The prayer lies ahead of you."He mounted again, and when he arrived at Muzdalifa, he dismounted and performed ablution thoroughly. Then the call for prayer was given and he prayed Maghrib. After that, each person made his camel kneel at his stopping place. Then the call for Isha was given and he prayed it, performing nothing in between the two prayers.
Malik narrated it in Hajj (197) from Musa bin Uqba, from Kurayb, the freedman of Ibn Abbas, from Usama bin Zayd, with this chain, and he mentioned it. Bukhari narrated it in Hajj (1672), and Muslim in Hajj (1280:276), both through the route of Malik, with the same chain, similarly. The adhan was not mentioned in this hadith, and this may go back to the general knowledge that needs no explanation, since the iqamah is always preceded by the adhan, and that is why Usama did not mention it. This interpretation is necessary so that the action of the Prophet ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage does not appear contradictory, since it was not repeated, and the hadith of Jabir is explicit about one adhan and two iqamahs. This is the sahih version of what the Prophet ﷺ did on this blessed night, and whatever contradicts it is either shadhdh or sahih but requiring interpretation. This is what Shafii held in his later position, and it is also a narration from Imam Ahmad, and Thawri held the same view. The well-known position from Imam Ahmad is that every person may choose whatever he considers appropriate.
