Some Jews said, "If this verse had been revealed to us, we would have taken that day as a festival."Umar asked, "Which verse?"They replied, "This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have approved Islam as your religion" [Maidah 5:3].Umar said, "I know exactly where it was revealed. It was revealed while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was standing at Arafah."
Bukhari narrated it in Maghazi (4407), and Muslim in Tafsir (3017), both by way of Sufyan Thawri, from Qays bin Muslim, from Tariq bin Shihab, as mentioned above. The wording is Bukhari's. Muslim's wording is similar, with the addition, "Sufyan said, I am not sure whether it was a Friday or not."Then Muslim narrated it by way of Idris (that is, bin Yazid Awdi) and Abu Umays (that is, Utba bin Abd Allah Masudi), separately, both of them from Qays bin Muslim, with the same account, in which it states that it was revealed on a Friday, without any doubt on their part.
