Aisha said, "The Quraysh and those who followed their religion used to stop at Muzdalifa, and they were called the Hums, while the rest of the Arabs would stop at Arafat. When Islam came, Allah commanded His Prophet ﷺ to go to Arafat, stand there, and then depart from it. That is the meaning of His statement, 'Then depart from the place from which the people depart' [Baqarah 2:199]."
Bukhari narrated it in the tafsir chapter (4520), and Muslim in the Hajj chapter (1219), both through Abu Muawiya Muhammad bin Khazim, who said, our teacher Hisham bin Urwa narrated to us, from his father, from Ayesha, and he related it as mentioned. In the version of Ibn Majah (3018), it reads, "We are the dwellers of the House, we do not go beyond the Haram. So Allah revealed ."In the wording of Tirmidhi, it reads, "We are the qatin of Allah."Tirmidhi said, "The meaning of this hadith is that the people of Makkah would not leave the Haram, while Arafah lies outside the Haram. The people of Makkah used to stand at Muzdalifa, saying, 'We are the qatin of Allah,' meaning the dwellers of Allah, while those other than the people of Makkah used to stand at Arafat. So Allah, Most High, revealed, "Then depart from the place from which the people depart"[Baqarah 2:199]."
