Then he went out through the gate toward Safa, and when he drew near to Safa he recited, "Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the rites of Allah" [Baqarah 2:158]. He said, "I begin with what Allah began with." So he began with Safa and climbed upon it... until, when he was on his final circuit at Marwa... and the hadith continues.
ثم خرج من الباب إلى الصفا فلما دنا من الصفا قرأ: {إن الصفا والمروة من شعائر الله} [البقرة: ١٥٨] أبدأ بما بدأ الله به، فبدأ بالصفا فرقي عليه… حتى إذا كان آخر طوافه على المروة… الحديث.
Muslim narrated it in the Hajj chapter (1218) through the route of Hatim bin Ismail Madani, from Jafar bin Muhammad, from his father, from Jabir, mentioning it in the long hadith. Malik also recorded it in the Hajj chapter (126) from Jafar bin Muhammad bin Ali, with the same chain, in an abridged form.
