The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he performed tawaf during Hajj or Umra upon his initial arrival, would jog for the first three circuits around the House, then walk the remaining four. He would then pray two rakahs and afterwards perform the saʿy between Safa and Marwa.
أن رسول الله ﷺ كان إذا طاف في الحج والعمرة أول ما يقدم فإنه يسعى ثلاثة أطواف بالبيت، ثم يمشي أربعة، ثم يصلي سجدتين، ثم يطوف بين الصفا والمروة.
Bukhari narrated it in the book of Hajj (1616), and Muslim in the book of Hajj (1261:231), both through Musa bin Uqba, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, and he mentioned it, the wording being Muslim's.Bukhari also said, Ismail bin Umaya said, I said to Zuhri, "Ataa says that the obligatory prayer suffices in place of the two rakah of tawaf, is that so?" He said, "The sunnah is better. The Prophet ﷺ never completed a circuit of tawaf without praying two rakah."This is how Imam Bukhari narrated it as a suspended and disconnected report. Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari (3/485), "Ibn Abu Shayba connected it in abridged form, saying, Yahya bin Salim narrated to us, from Ismail bin Umaya, from Zuhri, who said, It has been the established sunnah that two rakah accompany every circuit." Abdul-Razzaq also connected it, from Mamar, from Zuhri, in its complete form.
