We set out chanting the talbiyah with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, intending Hajj alone. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to Ayesha and found her weeping. He asked, "What is the matter with you?"She replied, "My situation is that I have begun menstruating. The people have come out of their state of ihram, but I have not, and I have not made tawaf around the House. Now the people are setting off for the Hajj."He said, "This is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam. Perform ghusl, then enter the state of ihram for Hajj."So she did, and she stood at all the ritual stations. Once she became pure, she made tawaf around the Kaabah and walked between Safa and Marwa. Then he said, "You have now completed both your Hajj and your Umrah."She said, "Messenger of Allah, I feel within myself that I did not perform tawaf around the House until after I had done my Hajj."He said, "Take her, Abdur-Rahman, and have her perform Umrah from Tanim." This was on the night of Hasbah.
Muslim narrated it in the chapter on Hajj (1213) through the route of Layth bin Saad, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir, as he mentioned it. His statement, "until she became pure she performed tawaf around the Kaaba, and Safa and Marwa," contains an indication that Ayesha did not perform sai until she had performed the tawaf of ifadah. In fact, she herself stated this explicitly, as in the hadith of Malik mentioned previously, where she said, "I arrived at Makkah while menstruating, and I had not performed tawaf around the House nor gone between Safa and Marwa."There is disagreement among the scholars regarding performing sai before tawaf. Hafiz said, "Ibn Tawaf al-Mundhir reported two opinions from Ata regarding one who began with sai before tawaf around the House. Some scholars of hadith held that it is sufficient, citing as evidence the hadith of Usama bin Sharik, that a man asked the Prophet ﷺ, saying, 'I performed sai before I performed tawaf?' He said, 'Perform tawaf, and there is no harm.' The majority held that it is not sufficient, and they interpreted the hadith of Usama as applying to one who performed sai after the tawaf of arrival and before the tawaf of ifadah."
