A man came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was at al-Jiranah, wearing a cloak that had perfume on it (or he said, traces of yellow dye), and asked, "How do you instruct me to perform my umrah?"Revelation then descended upon the Prophet ﷺ, and he was screened with a garment.Yala used to say, "I always wished I could see the Prophet ﷺ at the moment revelation descended upon him."Umar said to him, "Would it please you to look at the Prophet ﷺ while revelation is coming down upon him?"So Umar lifted the edge of the garment, and I looked at him. He was making a heavy sound (the narrator said, I think he said) like the snorting of a young camel.When the state passed from him, he said, "Where is the one who asked about the umrah? Wash off the traces of yellow dye (or he said, the traces of perfume), take off your cloak, and do in your umrah what you would do in your hajj."
جاء رجل إلى النبي وهو بالجعرانة، عليه جبة وعليها خلوق (أو قال: أثر صفرة) فقال: كيف تأمرني أن أصنع في عمرتي؟ قال: وأنزل على النبي ﷺ الوحي فستر بثوب وكان يعلى يقول: وددت أني أرى النبي ﷺ وقد نزل عليه الوحي؟ قال فقال: أيسرك أن تنظر إلى النبي ﷺ وقد نزل عليه الوحي؟ قال: فرفع عمر طرف الثوب فنظرت إليه له غطيط (قال: وأحسبه قال:) كغطيط البكر قال: فلما سري عنه قال: أ أين السائل عن العمرة؟ اغسل عنك أثر الصفرة (أو قال: أثر الخلوق) واخلع عنك جبتك، واصنع في عمرتك ما أنت صانع في حجك.
Bukhari reported it in the Virtues of the Quran (4985), and Muslim in Hajj (1180: 6), both from the hadith of Hammam, who said, Ata bin Abu Rabah told us, saying, Safwan bin Yaala informed me, and he related it. The wording given is that of Muslim, and the wording of Bukhari is similar. His saying, "a snorting sound," refers to a sound like that of a sleeping person. His saying, "like the snorting of a young camel" means a young camel.
