He heard a man from Syria asking Abdullah bin Umar about combining Umrah with Hajj as tamattu.Abdullah bin Umar replied, "It is permissible."The Syrian said, "But your father forbade it."Abdullah bin Umar responded, "Tell me, if my father forbade it but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did it, should we follow my father's command or the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"The man said, "Rather the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ indeed performed it."
Tirmidhi (824) narrated it from Abd bin Humayd, Yaqub bin Ibrahim bin Saad told me, our father narrated to us, from Salih bin Kaysan, from Ibn Shihab, that Salim bin Abdullah narrated it to him, and he mentioned it. Its chain is sahih.Tamattu here means Qiran, meaning that he ﷺ performed the acts of Umrah apart from shaving or trimming the hair, then performed Hajj, which is Qiran. Later, in technical usage, tamattu came to mean performing two separate rites within a single journey. Tirmidhi said, "The people of hadith prefer tamattu, combining Umrah with Hajj, and this is the view of Shafii, Ahmad, and Ishaq."On this subject there is also what has been narrated from Saad bin Abu Waqqas and Dahhak bin Qays, both of whom spoke of tamattu, combining Umrah with Hajj. Dahhak bin Qays said, "No one does that except someone ignorant of Allah's command." Saad said, "How poor is what you have said, nephew!" Dahhak bin Qays said, "Umar bin Khattab forbade that." Saad replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did it, and we did it with him."Malik narrated it in the Hajj chapter (63) from Ibn Shihab, from Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Harith bin Nawfal bin Abdul-Muttalib, that he told him he heard Saad bin Abu Waqqas and Dahhak bin Qays, in the year Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan performed Hajj, both speaking of tamattu, combining Umrah with Hajj, and he mentioned it. Through this route it was narrated by Tirmidhi (823) and Nasai (2736), and Tirmidhi said, "A sahih hadith."I say, however, it contains Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Harith bin Nawfal, whom no one deemed reliable except Ibn Hibban. For this reason, Hafiz said of him, "Acceptable," meaning if corroborated, and I have not found any corroboration for him.
