We set out in the state of ihram, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever has brought a sacrificial animal with him should remain in his ihram, and whoever has not brought a sacrificial animal should exit ihram."I had not brought a sacrificial animal, so I exited ihram, but Zubayr had brought one, so he did not exit ihram. She said, I put on my regular clothes and went out and sat beside Zubayr. He said, "Get away from me!"I replied, "Are you afraid I will pounce on you?"
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hajj (1236) through the route of Ibn Jurayj, who said, Mansur bin Abdul-Rahman told me, from his mother Safiya bint Shayba, from Asma bint Abu Bakr, and he related it.Ibn Abu Shayba narrated in his Musannaf (4/103) from Ibn Fudayl, from Yazid, from Mujahid, who said, Abdullah bin Zubayr said, "Perform Hajj alone and leave aside this saying of your blind man!" Abdullah bin Abbas said, "It is you whose heart Allah has blinded. Why don't you ask your mother about this?" So he sent to her, and she said, "Ibn Abbas has spoken the truth. We came with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intending Hajj, and we turned it into an Umrah, and we relaxed the state of ihram completely, until the incense burners were smoking among the men and women."This same route was also narrated by Ahmad (26917) and Tabarani in al-Kabir (24/no. 243). Yazid here is Ibn Abu Ziyad Hashimi, about whom the majority of scholars have made critical remarks, though Ibn Saad deemed him trustworthy. Ibn Hibban said, "He was truthful, but when he grew old his memory weakened and changed, and he would accept whatever was fed to him, so objectionable material crept into his hadith."As for his saying "smoking," it means rising, that is, the incense was passed around among them for its fragrance.
